The legendary nucleus that would birth STRID and MANES emerges from the Norwegian underground with this essential compilation of their complete recorded legacy. Malfeitor remained deliberately obscure during black metal's explosive rise to worldwide recognition, choosing to operate from the deepest shadows while their compatriots signed international deals. This collection captures the raw essence of their brief but potent two-year existence between 1991 and 1992.

"The Smell of Death" presents the complete discography of this Askim-based horde – one rehearsal tape and two demo recordings that were originally distributed in extremely limited quantities on home-dubbed cassettes. Devoted to stripped-down, minimalist black metal in the vein of early BATHORY, ILDJARN, and DARKTHRONE, Malfeitor possessed the potential for greatness that was cut short when they returned to the shadows after their promising second demo "Pandemonium". Though their story ended abruptly, their members' contributions to black metal continued through STRID and MANES (featuring Vicotnik from DØDHEIMSGARD).
