Background information about 'Computer Metal'
There is a very specific kind of joy in hearing a machine scream, and Master Boot Record have turned that joy into a full-length manifesto. "Computer Metal" is exactly what the name promises: baroque synth leads stacked on top of blast-beat programming, chiptune arpeggios that suddenly detonate into thrash riffing, and a low-end rumble that feels like a server farm overheating in real time. It is absurd, it is over the top, and it is completely, gloriously committed to its own bit.
What keeps this from being a novelty is the songwriting. These tracks have dynamics, tension and release, and a sense of drama that owes as much to classic heavy metal as it does to video game soundtracks. The keyboards do the work of a lead guitarist, the drums hit like a drum machine with a grudge, and the whole thing is wrapped in a production that is deliberately cold and digital — which is precisely the point. It is music made by a computer, for people who love riffs.
