Background information about 'Immutable'
Immutable is Meshuggah doing what only Meshuggah can do: taking the most punishing rhythmic mathematics in metal and somehow making it feel like a living, breathing organism. Thirteen tracks deep, this is the Swedish machine at its most patient and its most brutal, letting riffs cycle and mutate until they burrow somewhere permanent. The low end is absurd, the polyrhythms are dizzying, and yet there is a strange, almost hypnotic beauty running underneath all of it.
Jens Kidman sounds like a man narrating the end of the world from inside a collapsing cathedral, while the Thordendal/Hagström guitar tandem carves out riffs that feel less written than excavated. Tracks like the opener "Broken Cog" and the monstrous "The Abysmal Eye" set a tone of controlled demolition, and the record never once lets its foot off your chest. It is dense, demanding and endlessly rewarding — the kind of album that reveals a new layer every single time you press play.
