Background information about 'Kodama'

"Kodama," the fifth album by Blackgaze pioneers Alcest, heralds a robust return to their early stylistic grandeur while pushing new auditory boundaries. The term "Kodama" translates to 'tree spirit' and 'echo,' encapsulating the album's rich dynamics and cinematic ambience that hark back to their 2010 masterpiece "Écailles De Lune." Yet, it is not a mere nostalgic venture; instead, it bristles with fresh intensity, rhythm, and an organic essence. Drawing influence from an eclectic array of artists such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr., Grimes, and The Cure, "Kodama" distinguishes itself as Alcest's 'Japanese album,' steeped in Japanese art and culture. This concept was sparked by Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke", delving into themes of duality and belonging.

The visual artistry of "Kodama," crafted by French designers Førtifem, pays homage to Japanese illustrators like Takato Yamamoto. It fuses opposing elements including nature versus urbanity and youth versus death in a manner that enriches the narrative fabric of the album. This meticulous synthesis of cultural and compositional elements elevates "Kodama" beyond simple progression in Alcest's repertoire. It stands as a definitive testament to their pioneering legacy, inviting audiences on a compelling journey into their ever-evolving soundscape.
