Background information about 'Kodama'

There is a moment on "Kodama" where the guitars stop raging and simply shimmer, and you realize Alcest have done it again — built a cathedral out of distortion and moonlight. The French duo's fifth full-length is a furious, gorgeous return to the maximalism of their early work, all cascading tremolo, thunderous drumming and those impossibly tender clean passages that Neige has always wielded like a secret weapon. It "echoes" the landmark "Écailles De Lune" without ever feeling like a retread; the rhythms hit harder, the low end breathes deeper, and the whole thing moves with an organic pulse that most bands in this world can only dream about.

The backstory is as cinematic as the sound: the album was sparked by Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke", and that sense of living between worlds — city and forest, flesh and spirit — runs through every track. You can hear the ghosts of The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr, Grimes and The Cure drifting through the mix, yet the result is unmistakably Alcest's own "Japanese album". The artwork from French design duo Førtifem pays tribute to Japanese illustration, pairing nature with urbanity, youth with death, and wrapping it all in a beauty that is never merely pretty. This is a vital, relevant record from a band who helped invent a genre and still refuse to coast.
