Background information about 'Close'
Messa delivers a haunting masterpiece with "Close", an album that showcases the Italian quartet's evolution into one of doom metal's most compelling voices. This isn't your typical crushing doom affair – instead, Messa weaves together atmospheric passages, progressive structures, and Sara's mesmerizing vocals that float between ethereal beauty and raw power. Tracks like "Dark Horse" and "Rubedo" demonstrate the band's ability to craft songs that are both heavy and hypnotic, building tension through carefully constructed dynamics that explode into crushing crescendos.
The album's production perfectly captures the band's unique blend of vintage organ sounds, crushing guitar tones, and that distinctive vocal approach that sets them apart from their contemporaries. "Orphalese" stands as a particular highlight, showcasing how Messa can create epic compositions that feel both ancient and utterly modern. The interplay between Alberto's guitar work and Marco's bass creates a foundation that's both thunderous and nuanced, while Rocco's drumming provides the perfect rhythmic backbone for these sprawling compositions.
