The first time this thing lands on wax, and frankly it's about damn time. The Gates of Slumber's 2005 EP Like a Plague Upon the Land has been a fan favorite for two decades, passed around like a secret handshake among doom devotees, and now Svart Records finally gives it the vinyl treatment it always deserved. And what a slab it is.

Recorded in the band's early, hungry years, this is doom metal that doesn't need to hide behind production tricks or studio polish. It's raw, slow, impossibly heavy, and utterly convinced of its own power. Karl Simon's riffs crawl out of the speakers like something ancient waking up, and the whole thing drags you down into that sweet, crushing murk where time stops mattering. There's a real 70s rock swagger running through the marrow here too, that loose-limbed groove that makes the heaviness feel alive rather than sluggish.

This isn't an EP that asks for your patience, it demands it and then rewards you with pure, traditional doom. The kind of stuff that makes you want to sit in a dark room with the volume up and let the low end do the thinking. It's been praised for years for its authenticity to the genre, and hearing it now, remastered and finally pressed to vinyl, you understand exactly why it earned that reputation. Slow, heavy, and unshakeably true to the old ways.
