Background information about 'The Awakening'
There are records that just flatten you the second the needle drops, and The Awakening is exactly that kind of beast. The Gates of Slumber's crushing 2004 debut is raw, slow, monolithic traditional doom with a sound so gritty you can practically smell the basement it was forged in. This is battleaxe-in-the-gut riffing, the kind that hits you square in the chest and leaves you gasping, while those slow, mournful leads drag you deeper into the gloom with every passing minute.
What makes this album so special is how unashamedly classic it is. You can hear Pentagram and Candlemass coursing through every downtuned chord, but there's a wild, Conan-style lyrical streak and those unmistakable Ozzy-like wails from Karl Simon that give it a personality all its own. It's the sound of a band finding its voice in real time, and honestly, there's nothing quite like hearing that raw energy captured on wax. An essential cult classic for anyone who swears by true doom.
