There are records that simply hit you like a battleaxe to the gut, and The Gates of Slumber's crushing 2004 debut "The Awakening" is exactly that kind of monster. You can hear Pentagram and Candlemass coursing through every note, but there is a Conan-style barbarian spirit in the lyrical themes and those Ozzy-like vocals that give the whole thing a strange, addictive charm.
