Background information about 'The Awakening'
There are records that simply hit you like a battleaxe to the gut, and The Gates of Slumber's crushing 2004 debut "The Awakening" is exactly that kind of monster. When Karl Simon and his Indiana doom crew first unleashed this slab of raw, slow, monolithic traditional doom, it felt like the earth itself cracked open. There is nothing polished here, no studio gloss to hide behind, just a gritty, smoke-choked sound that drags you down into the depths and refuses to let go.
The riffs are the real deal, heavy as lead and slow as a funeral procession, while the leads weep and moan with a depressive weight that only true doom can conjure. You can hear Pentagram and Candlemass coursing through every note, but there is a Conan-style barbarian spirit in the lyrical themes and those Ozzy-like vocals that give the whole thing a strange, addictive charm. This is an essential cult classic, the kind of album that true doom devotees have been hunting down for years, and hearing it again after all this time is nothing short of a revelation.
