Midnight have never been a band interested in subtlety, and "No Mercy for Mayhem" is exactly the kind of title that tells you everything before a single note lands. What you get here is filthy, sleazed-out speed metal shot through with punk venom and first-wave black metal spite — the sound of a basement show that got out of hand, bottled and pressed onto wax. Athenar and his rotating cast of accomplices keep the riffs nasty, the drums relentless and the whole thing drenched in that greasy, beer-soaked atmosphere that makes this band so addictive.
There is real craft hiding under all the grime, though. The songs are short, sharp and built for maximum impact, each one a fist to the jaw that never overstays its welcome. It is the kind of record that rewards repeated spins — the hooks sneak up on you, the leads cut deep, and the sheer attitude is impossible to fake. Midnight understand that heavy music should be fun as hell as well as vicious, and this album delivers both in equal measure.
