Midnight Prey's second full-length, "Jenseitsritt", is one of those rare beasts that manages to do both. Hailing from Hamburg via the Black Forest, this German power-trio has been simmering since 2012, and their long-awaited follow-up to 2019's "Uncertain Times" is nothing short of a masterclass in gritty, heartfelt heavy rock.
What makes "Jenseitsritt" so utterly captivating is its effortless swagger. The band weaves together 70s hard rock swagger, traditional 80s metal muscle, and a dash of punk and speed metal urgency into something that feels timeless rather than retro. There's a raw, almost sweaty electricity running through these songs — you can practically smell the beer-soaked stage of a packed club. The melodies bend, break, and rebuild themselves in breathless fashion, yet the whole thing flows with a poetic, almost meditative quality. It's loud, it's dirty, it's cool as hell, and somehow it's also strangely relaxing. Midnight Prey have returned with unbridled fervor, and they've never sounded better.
