Background information about 'Satanic Royalty (15th Anniversary)'
Fifteen years on, "Satanic Royalty" still lands like a brick through a stained-glass window. Midnight never pretended to be anything other than what they are: a Cleveland trio that worships at the altar of first-wave black metal, speed metal filth and the kind of rock 'n' roll sleaze that used to get records banned. This is the album where Athenar and company perfected that filthy, blown-out formula — riffs that swagger before they stab, drums that sound like they were recorded in a garage with the door welded shut, and a vocal rasp that owes as much to punk as it does to Venom.
What makes the record endure is how joyfully unpretentious it is. There is no conceptual baggage here, no atmospheric padding — just ten tracks of leather-clad, hook-heavy nastiness that never overstays its welcome. The title cut alone is a career-defining anthem, and the deeper you dig, the more you notice how sharp the songwriting actually is beneath all that grime. It is a party record for people who like their parties loud, dirty and slightly dangerous.
For fans of: Venom, Bathory, Motörhead, Toxic Holocaust, Nunslaughter
