Background information about 'Sweet Death and Ecstasy'
There is no polite way to say it: Midnight make the kind of racket that smells of spilled beer, cheap leather and a basement that has never once seen daylight. "Sweet Death and Ecstasy" is the sound of a band who treat rock 'n' roll as a contact sport, all greasy riffs, snotty sneers and drums that hit like a bar fight breaking out in the back room. Athenar and his cohorts have spent years perfecting the art of the ugly hook, and this record is packed with them, each one buried under a layer of fuzz thick enough to lose a boot in.
What makes it work is the sheer glee of it. Nothing here is trying to be clever, and that is precisely the point. The tempos lurch and sprint, the vocals are spat rather than sung, and the whole thing feels like it was recorded in one sweaty take with the amps turned up past the point of good sense. It is sleaze, speed and punk venom welded onto a heavy metal chassis, and it never once apologises for the mess it leaves behind.
For fans of: Venom, Motörhead, Toxic Holocaust, Bathory, Inepsy
