Mortifero don't so much play songs as they exhume them. The Death Ballads is exactly what it claims to be — a collection of seven grim little hymns that claw their way up from the dark side of the American folk tradition, dusted off and dragged into the present with all the dirt still clinging to them. Recorded with a raw, almost candlelit intimacy, these tracks feel less like a studio session and more like a séance caught on tape.
From the opening churn of Necromancer to the sorrowful weight of Grief, the band threads a needle between dusty Americana, gothic folk and something far older and wilder. Jane Doe sways like a murder ballad whispered over a campfire, while Battle Cry stomps with a defiant, boot-heel rhythm that'll have you reaching for the volume knob. There's a beautiful tension running through the whole record — the melodies are gorgeous, but there's always something lurking just beneath, a chill that never quite leaves the room. Bundy and The Death Call are the kind of songs that get under your skin and stay there, the sort of material that would make Johnny Cash raise an eyebrow and Nick Cave crack a knowing smile.
