When Finnish metal pioneers Oz unleashed "Fire In The Brain" in 1983, they delivered what many consider their defining masterpiece. This sophomore effort found the band relocating to Stockholm and channeling their European metal identity into eight tracks of pure molten fury. The album strikes with the apocalyptic intensity of "Search Lights" before diving into the viscous darkness of "Black Candles" and the crushing weight of the title track itself.
What sets this record apart is its distinctly European approach to heavy metal – there's a melancholic undercurrent that runs beneath the thunderous riffs, creating an atmosphere that Canadian journalist Martin Popoff perfectly described as hitting "like a freight train." Tracks like "Fortune," "Megalomaniac," and "Gambler" showcase Oz at their most ferocious, while deeper cuts reveal the band's ability to craft mood and atmosphere alongside their crushing heaviness.
