Background information about 'Mythical & Magical'

There are reissues, and then there are resurrections. Pagan Altar's "Mythical & Magical" belongs firmly to the second category, a record that sounds less like it was recorded in a studio and more like it was excavated from a fog-drenched English churchyard. This is the band's third album, and the songs on it were mostly written between 1977 and 1983 — which explains everything you hear: the riffs have the heavy, deliberate tread of early doom, while the melodies carry a mournful, folk-tinged melancholy that no modern band could fake without sounding like a costume.

What makes this album so special is how unbothered it is by trends. There is no rush here, no attempt to impress. Guitars toll like bells, the bass rolls forward like a slow tide, and the vocals narrate old tales with the gravity of a man who has seen a few things he would rather not discuss. It is heavy Doom Rock and English folk holding hands in the dark, and the result is genuinely transportive — the kind of record that makes a room feel colder and older than it did five minutes ago.

Twenty years on, "Mythical & Magical" still stands as the pinnacle of the band's career, and this anniversary reissue does it proper justice. The double LP is pressed on beige vinyl across three sides, with a beautiful etching carved into side four — a fitting monument to a band whose legend only grows with time.
