Background information about 'Mythical & Magical'

Some records don't just get reissued, they get resurrected, and "Mythical & Magical" is exactly that kind of relic. This is the third full-length from Pagan Altar, the British doom institution whose songs here were mostly written between 1977 and 1983, back when nobody had a name for what they were doing. What you get is a strange, gorgeous hybrid: crushing heavy doom rock welded to mournful English folk, all of it sounding like it was dug out of a churchyard rather than a studio. The riffs move slow and deliberate, the vocals carry that haunted storyteller's tone, and the whole thing feels ancient in the best possible way.

Twenty years on from its original release, the album still stands as the pinnacle of their career, and this reissue makes that case loud and clear. Dying Victims Productions has kept the flame alive, continuing the work of the now-defunct Temple of Mystery Records so that this back catalogue stays in circulation where it belongs. Put it on after dark, let the folk melodies tangle with the doom, and you'll understand why people treat this band like a secret worth guarding.
