Background information about 'Levels of Perception'

There are re-recordings, and then there are re-recordings that feel like a band tearing open its own archive and finding something still warm inside. Pestilence have done the latter. "Levels of Perception" takes twelve cuts from across their long, restless career and drags them back into the light, not as a nostalgic victory lap but as a full-throttle re-imagining. The riffs are the ones you know, yet they land with a sharper edge, the guitars cutting cleaner and meaner, the rhythm section locked in with a hunger that suggests these songs were never really finished in the first place.

What makes this collection tick is the range on display. You get the neck-snapping fury of the early material sitting comfortably next to the twisted, jazz-flecked progressive death metal that has always been Pestilence's calling card. Patrick Mameli's playing remains a marvel, all jagged precision and weird harmonic logic, and hearing these tracks side by side turns the record into a proper career overview without ever feeling like a museum piece. The production is punchy and modern without sanding off the grit, and the whole thing moves with the energy of a band that still genuinely enjoys ripping through its own back catalogue.

For longtime devotees this is a chance to hear familiar warhorses with fresh muscle, and for newcomers it is a surprisingly good entry point into one of death metal's most idiosyncratic discographies. It is loud, it is strange, and it is clearly a labour of love.
