"In Times New Roman..." is the sound of a band that has nothing left to prove and everything left to say. Queens of the Stone Age return with their eighth studio album, and it hits like a desert thunderstorm rolling in unannounced. From the very first riff of "Obscenery", Josh Homme and company lock into that unmistakable groove that made them legends, but there's a darker, rawer edge running through these ten tracks. The production is grittier, the guitars bite harder, and the rhythm section feels like it's been sharpened on stone.
Tracks like "Paper Machete" and "Negative Space" show the band at their most direct, while "Emotion Sickness" and the monumental nine-minute closer "Straight Jacket Fitting" stretch out into hypnotic, sprawling territory that only QOTSA can navigate. There's a looseness here, a sense of freedom that comes from a band fully in control of their craft. "Time & Place" and "Carnavoyeur" are instant classics in the making, blending that signature stoner swagger with pop-smart hooks and lyrical venom. This is Queens of the Stone Age at their most confident, most unpredictable, and most essential.
