Background information about 'Nine'
Nine is what happens when a band has nothing left to prove and everything left to say. Russian Circles have spent two decades building a reputation as one of the most quietly devastating instrumental acts on the planet, and this record feels like the moment they stopped chasing and started carving. The Chicago trio — guitarist Mike Sullivan, bassist Brian Cook, drummer Dave Turncrantz — lock into grooves that breathe, shift, and then suddenly hit like a freight train you never heard coming. There are no vocals to hide behind here, no chorus to rescue a weak idea. Just three players, a room, and a whole lot of tension waiting to snap.
What makes Nine so gripping is its patience. Tracks like "Borehole" and "Empath" don't rush toward a payoff — they build architecture, layer by layer, until the low end is rattling your ribcage and the guitars are screaming somewhere far above the wreckage. "Meridian" drifts into something almost beautiful before the floor gives way, and "Seventh Seal" closes the whole thing with a sense of grim, hard-won resolution. It is heavy music for people who have grown tired of heavy music that shouts. Ask ten fans which Russian Circles album is the best and you will get ten different answers — that is exactly the point. Consistency at this level is its own kind of statement.
