Background information about 'Satanogenesis'
Satanogenesis is the sound of a band deciding that subtlety is for other people. Semargl come out of Ukraine with a record that is loud, ugly in the best possible way, and weirdly catchy for something this hostile — thirteen tracks that stomp between hammering black metal riffing and cold, machine-like industrial textures. The guitars are razor-wire, the drum programming hits like a malfunctioning press, and the keyboards smear everything in a greasy, sulphuric glow. It is not polished, and it should not be.
What makes it stick is the sheer shamelessness of the songwriting. "Graceful Infection by Evil" opens the gates with a snarl, "The Funeral of a Beast" stretches out into a grim, hypnotic crawl, and "Maxima Satan" swings with a groove that is almost danceable before it turns on you. There is a Russian-language track tucked in near the end, "Молитва Очищения (Prayer of Purifying)", which lands like a cold hand on the back of the neck, and the closing "Copulation with Mechanism" is pure mechanical spite. Two decades on, this thing still smells of brimstone and cheap rehearsal-room sweat.
For fans of: Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Anaal Nathrakh, Mysticum, Samael
