Background information about 'Marrow Of The Spirit (Remix & Remaster)'

Some records you simply do not touch. Marrow of the Spirit was never one of them, and Agalloch knew it better than anyone. When the Portland collective retreated to record in 2010, they deliberately turned their backs on the sleek, song-driven polish of Ashes Against the Grain and went hunting for something rawer: the ghost of a black metal album that might have been cut to tape in 1970. Clean turned dirty. Digital amp sims gave way to vintage tubes. Tight structures unspooled into vast, cinematic sprawl. The record opens on a lone cello, then detonates into the most ferocious blast beats the band ever committed to tape.

The trouble was the mix. Steven Wray Lobdell captured the performances and the sweat, but the warmth, the depth, the analog breath the band was chasing kept slipping out of reach, buried details and lost arrangements that no amount of mastering polish could fully rescue. So they went back to the source. Markus Stock, whose productions had long served as the reference point for the atmosphere Agalloch wanted, took on the remix at Klangschmiede Studio E, with Gus Elg handling a fresh master. The result is not a rewrite and not an erasure of history. It is a revelation: the same untamed, esoteric, deeply cinematic beast, now heard with the depth and physical force it always deserved. "They Escaped the Weight of Darkness" has never sounded this heavy. Neither has "Black Lake Niðstång."
