Background information about 'Marrow Of The Spirit (Remix & Remaster)'
There are reissues, and then there are reissues that make you rethink a record you thought you already knew by heart. Agalloch's "Marrow Of The Spirit" belongs firmly in the second camp. Originally tracked in 2010 by Steven Wray Lobdell with the instincts of an old-school experimental session — loose, physical, alive — the album was always meant to sound like a black metal record cut in 1970. What we got instead was a mix that buried half the magic. The band knew it. They just never got the chance to fix it. Until now.
Enter Markus Stock, whose productions had long been the reference point for the depth and cohesion Agalloch were chasing. Mixed at Klangschmiede Studio E and freshly mastered by Gus Elg, this 2026 edition drags the buried performances back into the light. The cello intro that erupts into ferocious blast beats hits harder. "Black Lake Niðstång" breathes with a warmth the original only hinted at. Nothing has been sanitized — the rawness, the dirt, the analog grit are all still there, just finally in focus. It is the same untamed, cinematic, deeply esoteric beast, now heard with the force it always deserved. Not a replacement. A revelation.
