Originally released in 2006, "Ashes Against the Grain" seamlessly blends heaviness with atmosphere and precision, marking Agalloch's continued evolution while maintaining their dark metal roots. This third full-length combines elements of black metal, Scandinavian prog-rock, and post-rock with the band's signature melancholic, contemplative style. From the driving force of "Falling Snow" to the dissolving trilogy "Our Fortress Is Burning...", this represents Agalloch at their most direct and elemental.

In contrast to the warm fiery nightsky of "Pale Folklore" and the monumental poetic folk of "The Mantle", "Ashes..." gazes into a horizon of dying embers with clarity. The band's panoramic scope of songwriting takes on a widescreen scale, with the album's imagery and production aligning into a monolithic statement that is sharp, modern, and unrelentingly melancholic.
