SENTENCED · Down | CD

Super jewel box CD with 12-page booklet.

Background information about 'Down'

By 2003, Sentenced had already carved their name deep into the frozen soil of Finnish metal, and "Down" arrived as their fourth full-length — a record that trades some of the gothic shimmer of its predecessors for a heavier, more grounded kind of melancholy. The guitars are thick and downtuned, the rhythms roll with a grim determination, and Ville Laihiala's voice sits right at the edge of despair and defiance. It is the sound of a band who knew exactly what they wanted and refused to soften a single corner to get it.

What makes "Down" stick is the songwriting. These are not just riffs stacked on top of each other; there is real craft in the way the melodies sneak out of the heaviness, the way a chorus can feel like a fist closing around your chest. Originally issued by Century Media in 2003, the album has aged into something of a cult favorite among the band's followers, and this 2024 repress on Cosmic Key Creations brings it back in a super jewel box with a 12-page booklet, issued under exclusive license from Century Media Records. For anyone who came to Sentenced through their later, more polished work, "Down" is the record that shows where all that darkness was forged.
