Background information about 'Flykt'
There is something wonderfully cold-blooded about the way Sinister Strain go about their business. "Flykt" does not bother with a gentle introduction — it opens a door and lets the draft in, all jagged tremolo riffing, drums that hit like a hammer on frozen ground and vocals buried somewhere between a rasp and a howl. This is black metal that remembers it is supposed to feel dangerous, not decorative.
What makes the record stick, though, is the restraint. The band knows when to pull back, letting a mournful lead line hang in the air before the next storm breaks, and those quieter passages are where "Flykt" really gets under your skin. The production is raw but never sloppy — you can hear every string scrape and cymbal wash, and the whole thing has that live-in-a-cellar urgency that so many modern productions sand away. It is a record built for headphones at 2 a.m. and for a packed, sweaty room in equal measure.
