Background information about 'Naiv'
Tamás Kátai has never been a man for straight lines, and "Naiv" is the glorious proof. The ninth Thy Catafalque full-length takes its cue from the Naïve Art movement — that wonderful tradition of painters who ignored the rulebook and built their own worlds out of whatever felt true. Kátai does exactly that with sound. Ambient washes bleed into Hungarian folklore, jazz phrasing bumps shoulders with electronica, and somewhere underneath it all a metal backbone keeps everything from floating away. It should be a mess. It is instead a mosaic, every shard placed with the patience of someone who has been doing this for two decades and still gets a kick out of surprising himself.
What makes "Naiv" such a rewarding spin is how much it withholds on first listen. The melodies are deceptively simple, almost childlike in their directness, but the arrangements around them are dense and restless — wave, pop, rock and folk all circling each other without ever quite settling. Give it your full attention and it opens up; give it ten more spins and it keeps handing over new details, like a puzzle box that rewards curiosity rather than brute force. The artwork by Irene Sáiz Guerrero matches the music perfectly: colourful, strange, and utterly its own thing.
