Background information about 'Opiate (Re-Release)'
Long before the world knew what to do with them, Tool were already building something strange and beautiful in the dark. "Opiate" is where it all starts — six tracks of raw, wiry, gloriously unhinged early nineties alternative metal, recorded when Maynard James Keenan was still figuring out exactly how far he could push a scream and Adam Jones was sharpening riffs like scalpels. It is lean, it is mean, and it is absolutely thrilling.
The title track alone is worth the price of admission, a slow-burning, hypnotic monster that swells and coils before finally snapping. "Sweat" and "Hush" kick the door in with a swagger that most bands never locate in an entire career, while the live takes of "Cold And Ugly" and "Jerk-Off" capture a band already ferocious on stage, feeding off an audience that had no idea it was witnessing the birth of a legend. There is grit here, sure — this is a young band, not yet the progressive titans of "Lateralus" — but that grit is exactly the point. You can hear the hunger.
