Finally, Týr's mighty debut album gets the vinyl treatment it always deserved! "How Far to Asgaard" has been largely overlooked for far too long, and that is a crying shame. While the Faroese masters would go on to craft progressive masterpieces like "Eric The Red" and "Ragnarok", their 2002 debut shows a band already firing on all cylinders, just with a slightly different engine.
This is Týr before the progressive excess, closer to classic eighties epic and doom metal. The song structures are leaner, the pace mostly mid-tempo, but the hooks are absolutely there. The opener "Hail to the Hammer" is a simple, catchy beast with a sing-along chorus that absolutely kills live - arguably Týr's first hit song. What really sets this record apart is the deep dive into Faroese tradition and Norse mythology woven into the lyrics, alongside subtle touches of Faroese folk melodies that would bloom fully on later albums. The title track and the epic "Ormurin Langi" show a band with serious ambition and the chops to back it up. Every fan of Týr owes it to themselves to hear where the legend began - this is raw, honest Viking metal with heart and heritage in equal measure.
