Background information about 'Gathered Around the Oaken Table'

There are albums that simply refuse to fade into the shadows of time, and Mithotyn's "Gathered Around the Oaken Table" is exactly that kind of beast. Originally released in 1999, this record marked the final chapter of the Swedish trio before they evolved into the mighty Falconer, and man, what a way to go out. This re-issue comes remastered and sporting fresh artwork by Kris Verwimp, breathing new life into a cult classic that deserves way more recognition than it got back in the day.

What strikes you immediately is how effortlessly Mithotyn blend the frostbitten rawness of Black Metal with the warmth of Folk and Viking themes. The riffs are melodic as hell, weaving tales of ancient battles and Norse mythology without ever losing their edge. The vocals shift between strained blackened rasps, deep growls, and clean chanting passages that give the whole thing an almost epic, campfire-story vibe. Tracks like "Lord of Ironhand" and "The Well of Mimir" are absolute bangers, mixing aggression with a surprising sense of melody that sticks in your head for days. It's not as crushing as Amon Amarth, but that's precisely its charm — it invites you in rather than bludgeons you. A hidden gem of Viking Metal that deserves a spot in every collection.
