There is a particular kind of joy in digging up a record like this: Tyrant's "Mean Machine" is the sound of a band who never got the memo that heavy metal was supposed to be polite. This is raw, beer-soaked, riff-first metal from an era when a leather jacket and a bad attitude were enough of a business plan, and it absolutely rips.
The guitars come at you like a bar fight you accidentally started, all chugging power chords and squealing leads, while the vocals sit somewhere between a sneer and a shout. "Free For All" and "We Stay Free" kick the door in immediately, and by the time "Making Noise And Drinking Beer" arrives you already know exactly what this band is about — no pretence, no concept album, just volume. There is a looseness here that modern productions would sand away, and that is precisely the charm: you can hear a band playing together in a room, chasing the same riff, having the time of their lives. The title track and "Invaders" lean into the darker, more anthemic side, and "Grapes Of Wrath" and "Blood Suckin' Woman" keep the sleaze dial turned all the way up. It is unashamed, gloriously unpolished heavy metal, and it still hits like a hammer to the skull.
