"Scary Muzak" stands as Ulver's most hauntological moment, a spine-chilling journey through the aesthetics of late '70s and early '80s horror cinema. Born from a one-off Halloween performance of John Carpenter's iconic Halloween score at a restored 1920s cinema in Oslo, this album captures the essence of bygone nights filled with slasher films, exploitation flicks, and giallo masterpieces. The Norwegian quartet – Ole Alexander Halstensgård, Kristoffer Rygg, Tore Ylwizaker, and Stian Westerhus – retreated to their studio beneath a haunted hill, crafting radiophonic workshop experiments that blur the lines between homage and original creation.

Five of the twelve tracks are covers of Carpenter's themes, while the remaining pieces emerge from outer realms of synthesized terror. Mixed by Carpenter Brut and mastered by Thibault Chaumont at Deviant Lab, the album whirls up themes and moods hidden in the foggy back alleys of youth. Sometimes classy and chilling, other times amusingly smooth and sleazy, "Scary Muzak" presents an inspired, goblinesque addition to Ulver's ever-expanding catalogue that feels like the gloomy siblings of Les Humphries and Gert Wilden armed with synths, pads, and effects.
