Background information about 'Nychta Psychis'

Urarv have never been a band in a hurry, and that patience pays off in spades on "Nychta Psychis". Launched back in 2003 by Aldrahn — the man whose vocal cords left permanent scars on landmark records by Thorns, Dødheimsgard and Zyklon-B — this Norwegian outfit has always operated on its own clock, releasing little and meaning every second of it. Thirty-two minutes is all they need here, and not one of them feels wasted.

What hits first is the sheer nerve of the thing. The core is unmistakably black metal, but Urarv refuse to play it safe, folding in strange rhythmic detours, off-kilter melodies and textures that have no business sitting next to tremolo riffing — and yet they land perfectly. Aldrahn is the star of the show, shifting from a rasp to a chant to something almost fragile within a single verse, and it is genuinely breathtaking to follow. It is adventurous, sophisticated and completely unpretentious at the same time, which is a rare combination in this corner of the world.

This is honest music from seasoned players who have nothing left to prove and nobody left to please. If the early Dødheimsgard records still live rent-free in your head, "Nychta Psychis" belongs right beside them.
