Background information about 'Nychta Psychis'

Some records announce themselves with a polite knock. "Nychta Psychis" kicks the door clean off its hinges. Urarv was launched back in 2003 by Aldrahn, the Norwegian voice forever etched into black metal history through his unmistakable work with THORNS, DØDHEIMSGARD and ZYKLON-B, and the project has always operated at its own strange pace. A small but exquisite body of work, delivered whenever the mood strikes. Now, 32 minutes of idiosyncratic black metal insanity arrive, and the best part is that the weirdos have not strayed a single inch from their gloriously crooked path.

From the very first second it is obvious that Urarv could not care less what anyone expects. There is a stern black metal core beating underneath, no question, but instead of playing it safe the band embraces an experimental approach to songwriting, folding in unusual elements that have no business sitting next to tremolo riffing and yet somehow fit like they were always meant to. The result is a beautifully unconventional record, adventurous and sophisticated without ever sounding pretentious or artificially original. And then there is that voice. Aldrahn's sheer versatility across these tracks is breathtaking, shifting shape from a rasp to a chant to something almost theatrical, always in service of the song.

This is honest music written by seasoned musicians who have nothing left to prove and nobody left to please. If the early works of DØDHEIMSGARD, spiced with a handful of ingredients you cannot quite name, are your kind of poison, do yourself a favour and grab a copy.
