Background information about 'Nychta Psychis'

Nychta Psychis is the sound of a band that long ago stopped caring what anyone expects of them — and thank the dark gods for that. Urarv, the project Aldrahn launched back in 2003, has always been a strange and wonderful outlier in the Norwegian scene, and this record is the finest proof yet. Thirty-two minutes of idiosyncratic black metal insanity, delivered with the confidence of musicians who have absolutely nothing left to prove.

What makes Nychta Psychis so gripping is the way it refuses to sit still. There is a stern black metal core here, no question, but the band keeps reaching sideways — odd rhythmic detours, textures that have no business being in this genre, structures that unravel just when you think you have them figured out. And then there is that voice. Aldrahn, the man whose pipes defined landmark records by Thorns, Dødheimsgard and Zyklon-B, is in absolutely breathtaking form, shifting from a rasp to a croak to something almost melodic within a single phrase. It is theatrical without ever tipping into parody, adventurous without sounding like it is trying to impress anybody.

The whole thing feels honest in a way that is genuinely rare. No posturing, no trend-chasing, just seasoned weirdos doing exactly what they want. If you have any love for the early Dødheimsgard records, this is essential listening — and honestly, even if you do not, the sheer audacity on display here deserves your attention.
