Background information about 'Shanderilan'
Alexander Veljanov has one of those voices you recognise after half a bar, and "Shanderilan" is the best argument in years for why that matters. His fourth solo record arrives after a long, almost stubborn silence, and it opens like a door into a room you forgot you missed. Multi-layered arrangements unfold patiently, letting that deep, velvety baritone sit right up front where it belongs. One moment there is refined beauty, the next a flash of barely concealed anger, then a slow slide into mesmerising darkness or a chorus that suddenly turns into an epic hymn. Nothing here feels rushed, and nothing feels padded either.
The production is the work of Veljanov together with Macedonian composer and guitarist Goran Trajkoski, and you can hear the trust between them in every corner of the mix. Guitars breathe instead of shout, electronics stay tasteful, and the songwriting carries the weight rather than the effects. For anyone who followed him since the Deine Lakaien days, this is the sound of a singer who has grown into his own instrument completely, moving from low resonance into higher registers without ever losing that unmistakable Slavonic timbre. It is dark, seductive, and genuinely moving, the kind of record that rewards a quiet evening and a decent pair of headphones. Welcome back, indeed.
