Background information about 'Shanderilan'

There are voices that don't just sing a song, they inhabit it. Alexander Veljanov owns one of those voices, and on "Shanderilan" he lets it stretch out across a whole album's worth of shadow and light. His fourth solo record arrives after a long, frustrating silence, and it lands like a slow-burning revelation. The baritone is still impossibly deep, warm and velvety, gliding up into higher registers without ever losing that unmistakable Slavonic timbre. But what surrounds it this time is richer than ever: multi-layered arrangements that shift from refined, almost fragile beauty into barely concealed anger, then slide down into a mesmerising darkness or swell into something genuinely hymnal. The songwriting is razor sharp, the production immaculate, and the whole thing feels like the work of a man who has spent years sharpening his craft in private.

Recorded in close collaboration with Macedonian composer and guitarist Goran Trajkoski, "Shanderilan" carries the weight of a career without ever sounding weighed down. You can hear echoes of the Deine Lakaien legacy in the dramatic sweep, but this is very much Veljanov's own territory, a place where elegance and unease hold hands. Tracks like the opening "Nomos Shanderilan" set the tone with patient, deliberate grandeur, while "Take a Knee" and "Perfect World" reveal a sharper edge underneath the velvet. "Nightbird" and "Our Mother the Mountain" drift into haunting, cinematic spaces, and "Annabel 2026" feels like a ghost revisiting an old obsession. It is dark music for grown-ups, made by someone who knows exactly how much power lives in restraint.
