Background information about 'Stand in Your Light'

There is a particular kind of record that only gets made when people have already lived a few lives inside the music business, and "Stand in Your Light" is exactly that record. Venus Principle are a British-Swedish collective that came together in autumn 2019, after several members walked away from Crippled Black Phoenix — not because they had fallen out of love with dark, melodic art rock, but because they simply could not stop. So they called in friends: active and former players from At the Gates, Ison, Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster and Louise Lemón, and built something that sounds like a late-night conversation between grief and gratitude.

Classic rock sits at the very heart of this debut, but the band keeps feeding it strange, beautiful things. Pain and darkness soak through every track, and out of that comes a terrible beauty — the kind that makes you turn the volume up instead of down. Yet shadow needs light, and these eleven songs know it. There are moments of real tenderness here, of warmth, of hope offered without irony, and it is precisely there that the metal blood of the players shows through. Anyone still carrying a wound from Anathema's split will find something close to balm in these grooves. It is a debut, yes — but it behaves like a fully-fledged masterpiece, mature, unhurried and deeply felt.
