Background information about 'Stand in Your Light'
Some records announce themselves with a roar. "Stand in Your Light" does something far more interesting: it pulls you in slowly, then refuses to let go. Venus Principle are a British-Swedish collective of veterans — people who cut their teeth in Crippled Black Phoenix and who count active and former members of At the Gates, Ison, Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster and Louise Lemón among their ranks — and you can hear every mile of that road in these eleven tracks. Classic rock sits at the core, but the band keeps feeding it strange things: solemn melody, psychedelic drift, and a darkness that never feels like a pose.
What makes this debut so striking is its balance. Pain and shadow run through the whole thing, yet the record keeps finding pockets of tenderness, warmth and genuine hope — light leaking through the cracks, exactly as the title promises. The guitars can crush and then suddenly open into something almost fragile, and the vocals carry that worn, knowing weight that only comes from people who have actually lived a few lives. For anyone still grieving the end of Anathema, this is the balm you have been waiting for, delivered with the maturity of a band that has nothing left to prove and everything left to say.
