VIRGIN STEELE · Noble Savage | YELLOW 2LP

Yellow double vinyl in gatefold cover with 11 bonustracks.

Background information about 'Noble Savage'

There is a moment on "Noble Savage" where Virgin Steele stop being a very good heavy metal band and become something closer to a force of nature. It happens somewhere between the martial stomp of the opening salvo and the sweeping, near-operatic drama that follows — and once it hits, there is no going back. This is the record where David DeFeis let his theatrical instincts off the leash, building cathedrals of riffing and myth-drenched storytelling that owe as much to classic composers as they do to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The guitars bite hard, the rhythm section drives like a war chariot, and the vocals reach for heights most singers would not dare attempt.

What makes this re-release such a gift is the sheer generosity of it. Spread across two slabs of yellow vinyl and housed in a gorgeous gatefold, the original album is joined by a full side of bonus material and a second side of tracks that had never seen the light of day before. Those previously unreleased cuts are the real treasure here — raw, hungry, and full of the kind of reckless energy that only exists when a band knows nobody is watching. Add the instrumental pieces and the bonus tracks, and you get a portrait of a group at the peak of its creative ambition, unafraid to be grandiose.
