Background information about 'Disir'
There are albums that simply hit you, and then there are those that pull you into the earth itself. VÖLUR's Disir belongs firmly to the latter. The Icelandic quartet, known for their crushing blend of doom and death metal, delivers a sophomore effort that feels ancient, ritualistic, and deeply rooted in the Nordic soil.
The four tracks on this record unfold like a slow-burning ceremony. From the opening chords of „Es Wächst Aus Seinem Grab“ – a track that builds from a menacing crawl into a devastating wall of sound – to the haunting melodies of „White Phantom“, VÖLUR prove they understand the weight of silence just as much as the power of a crushing riff. The production is raw yet spacious, allowing every cavernous growl and mournful guitar line to breathe. There is a cinematic quality here, a sense of dread and beauty intertwined that recalls the stark landscapes of the band's homeland.
This is not music for the impatient. It is slow, deliberate, and demands your full attention. But for those willing to sink into its depths, Disir reveals layers of melody and atmosphere that reward repeated listens. The title itself refers to female spirits and deities in Norse mythology, and the music carries that same otherworldly, almost ghostly presence.
