Background information about 'Woods 4: The Green Album'

Woods of Ypres delivered their crowning achievement with "Woods 4: The Green Album", a record that defies easy categorization and rewards patient listening in equal measure. David Gold crafted something deeply personal here, blending the crushing weight of doom metal with melancholic melodies that linger long after the final note fades. The album moves through shifting emotional landscapes, from the gut-punch heaviness of "Shards Of Love" to the hauntingly beautiful "By The Time You Read This (I Will Already Be Dead)," which carries a weight that feels almost prophetic in hindsight.

What makes this record so special is how naturally it flows between aggression and introspection. "Wet Leather" and "Natural Technologies" showcase the band's ability to lock into hypnotic grooves, while "Don't Open The Wounds / Skywide Arms Spread" builds tension masterfully across its extended runtime. The addition of Musk Ox's dreamscape interludes featuring cello and oboe adds an unexpected classical dimension that elevates the whole affair. This is doom metal that thinks beyond genre constraints, embracing elements of gothic rock and post-punk along the way. "The Green Album" remains a testament to Gold's singular vision and one of the most emotionally resonant records in the modern doom canon.
