There are moments in music where the boundaries between genres, between worlds, between the physical and the ethereal simply dissolve. Cynic have made a career out of those moments, and Carbon-Based Anatomy might just be their most transcendent offering yet. Clocking in at just over 23 minutes, this EP is a masterclass in saying everything that needs to be said without a single wasted breath.

From the opening atmospheric swell of "Amidst The Coals", you know you're not in Kansas anymore. Paul Masvidal's voice floats like a benevolent spirit over a tapestry woven from progressive metal, ambient textures, and something that feels almost sacred. The title track, "Carbon-Based Anatomy", erupts with a riff that grabs you by the collar before dissolving into passages of stunning beauty — the kind that makes you stare at the ceiling and wonder how three musicians can create something this vast. Then comes "Bija!", a swirling, mantra-like invocation that fuses Indian influences with the band's signature otherworldly jazz-metal hybrid, and suddenly you realize: this isn't just an EP, it's a portal.

The second half doesn't let up. "Box Up My Bones" might be one of the most emotionally devastating pieces the band has ever written — a meditation on mortality delivered with such grace that it leaves you breathless. "Elves Beam Out" crackles with cosmic energy before the closing "Hieroglyph" wraps everything in a shimmering, ambient glow. Sean Reinert's drumming dances between ferocity and finesse, while Sean Malone's bass work provides the grounding force that keeps these interstellar explorations tethered to something deeply human. This is progressive music in the truest sense — not just pushing boundaries, but rendering them obsolete.
