From the opening lope of "Animal Crown," the Denver quartet establishes a sound that is unmistakably their own: tremolo-picked fury woven through with mournful clean guitar, galloping rhythms that feel less like blastbeats than the hooves of a rider crossing endless sagebrush. The centerpiece, the thirteen-minute "On Horseback They Carried Thunder," is a masterclass in patient, cinematic heaviness — it builds, breathes, and collapses like a storm rolling over the prairie. There is real atmosphere here, the kind that seeps into your bones, and the production from Colin Marston gives every note a vast, open-air weight.

What sets Wayfarer apart is how thoroughly they commit to the concept. This isn't black metal with a cowboy hat slapped on — it's a genuine fusion, where the desolation of the American West becomes the emotional engine of the music itself. "The Crows Ahead Cry War" and "A Nation of Immigrants" are rich with longing, rage, and a strange, elegiac beauty. It is heavy, yes, but it is also deeply human.
