Background information about 'Sixteen Tons'
Weedeater delivers another crushing dose of Southern sludge with "Sixteen Tons", an album that showcases the North Carolina trio's ability to blend crushing riffs with their signature swamp-soaked atmosphere. The record opens with "Bull", immediately establishing the band's trademark low-end rumble and Dixie Dave Collins' distinctive growled vocals that sound like they've been marinated in bourbon and motor oil. Tracks like "Potbelly" and "Time Served" demonstrate the band's knack for creating hypnotic, repetitive passages that build into devastating walls of sound, while maintaining the kind of groove that makes you want to nod your head even as your eardrums surrender.
The album's second half continues the assault with standout tracks like "Woe's Me" and "Buzz", where the band explores slightly more experimental territory without losing their core identity. The production captures every nuance of their amplifier worship, from the subtle feedback squeals to the earth-shaking bass drops that have become their calling card. "Sixteen Tons" proves that Weedeater remains one of the most authentic voices in modern doom, creating music that feels both primal and carefully crafted.
