Background information about 'A Black Moon Broods over Lemuria'

There are albums that define genres, and then there's Bal-Sagoth's "A Black Moon Broods over Lemuria" — a record that didn't just dip its toes into symphonic black metal, it drowned the whole genre in a tidal wave of eldritch fantasy and baroque grandeur. Originally unleashed in 1995 via Cacophonous Records, this debut album from the UK's most theatrical black metal outfit sounds just as worldly and magnificent today as it did three decades ago.

From the very first notes of "Hatheg-Kla", you're thrown into a cinematic vortex of orchestral synths, thunderous blastbeats, and Byron Roberts' unmistakable narration — part warlock, part battlefield commander. The man doesn't just sing, he declaims tales of Atlantean spires, serpent kings, and shadowy pyramids with a theatricality that borders on the occult. Tracks like "Spellcraft & Moonfire (Beyond the Citadel of Frosts)" and the epic title track weave together crushing riffs and sweeping keyboard melodies that feel like the soundtrack to a lost fantasy epic. This is black metal with its tongue firmly in the cheek of a skull — grandiose, unapologetic, and utterly captivating.

This reissue, expertly remastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, breathes new life into these recordings. The 20-page booklet with never-before-seen photos and an in-depth interview with Byron Roberts (conducted by Olivier "Zoltar" Badin) makes this the definitive edition of a true cult classic.
