Over three decades deep and still absolutely feral, the Boston legends return with Hum Of Hurt — and make no mistake, this is not nostalgia, this is not a band coasting on legacy. This is four musicians who still sound like they have everything to prove.

From the opening assault of Slip The Noose, it's clear that Converge haven't lost a single step. Jacob Bannon's vocals remain one of the most distinctive and emotionally devastating instruments in heavy music — part howl, part confession, all catharsis. Kurt Ballou's guitar work is as inventive as ever, weaving dissonant textures and sudden melodic gut-punches into a sound that's unmistakably his. Ben Koller's drumming? Still absolutely ridiculous — the man defies physics on tracks like Detonator, pushing the chaos into territory that feels both calculated and completely unhinged. And Nate Newton's bass holds the whole beautiful mess together with a groove that hits you right in the chest.

What makes Hum Of Hurt truly special, though, is the songwriting. Converge have always understood that aggression without dynamics is just noise. The title track is a masterclass in tension and release, building from a creeping, almost meditative dread into something that feels like the sky splitting open. I Won't Let You Go might be one of the most emotionally raw things they've ever written — it's the sound of holding on when everything tells you to let go. And closer Nothing Is Over leaves you with that rare feeling: exhausted, cleansed, and desperate to hit play again. This is Converge at their absolute peak.
