DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT · Saldorian Spell | CD

Background information about 'Saldorian Spell'

There is a particular kind of cold that only comes from the German underground, and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult have been distilling it since the late nineties. "Saldorian Spell", the fifth chapter in their grim book, was conjured between July and September 2009 at Soundsight Studio, and it lands like a ritual that was never meant for daylight. Onielar's vocals are the centrepiece — a rasping, venomous rasp that sits somewhere between a curse and a sermon, draped over guitar lines that Velnias keeps deliberately raw and unpolished. Horrn's drumming drives everything forward with a relentless, almost martial pulse, and Grigorr's session bass adds a low, oily rumble underneath it all.

What makes this record so compelling is its refusal to chase trends. This is old-school black metal played with conviction, the kind that values atmosphere over production gloss and riffcraft over gimmickry. Tracks like the title cut and "The Saturnine Chapel" stretch out past the six-minute mark, building tension through repetition and release rather than cheap shocks, while shorter bursts like "Kataklysmic Bretherens" hit fast and leave a mark. Armin Rave's recording keeps the whole thing sounding cavernous and live, as if the band were performing in a stone cellar somewhere far from civilisation.

It is a record that rewards patience and repeated listens, the sort of album that reveals new layers of malice each time you return to it. Essential for anyone who takes their black metal seriously and unadorned.
