Background information about 'Soulside Journey'
Before Darkthrone became the undisputed masters of Norwegian black metal, they crafted one of death metal's most atmospheric and technically proficient albums. "Soulside Journey" stands as a fascinating glimpse into the band's early evolution, showcasing their prowess in a completely different sonic realm before their legendary transformation into black metal pioneers.
Recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studios in Sweden with producer Tomas Skogsberg, this 1991 masterpiece captures Darkthrone at their most complex and technically ambitious. The album weaves together intricate death metal compositions with haunting atmospheric passages, drawing influences from acts like Autopsy and Death while maintaining a distinctly Nordic sensibility. Tracks like "Cromlech" and "Neptune Towers" demonstrate the band's ability to craft both crushing heaviness and ethereal beauty within the same sonic framework.
