Background information about 'Mucous Secretion'
Before Pungent Stench became a byword for greasy, groove-ridden death metal, three maniacs from Vienna plugged in, hit record on a ghetto blaster, and let the tape roll. "Mucous Secretion" is that moment, captured in one take in 1988 with no overdubs, no frills and absolutely no polish. What survives is gloriously ugly: riffs that lurch and stumble, vocals gargled straight from the gutter, and a rhythm section that sounds like it's playing through a wall of wet cardboard. It is raw, repulsive and completely magnetic — the sound of a band who had no idea they were writing history, only that they wanted to be the most vile thing in Austria.
The real treasure here is the restoration job. Erwin Hermsen at Toneshed Studio (Trouble, Therion, Legion of the Damned, Dead Head) has remastered the demo with a careful hand — restored, as the liner notes put it, but never sterilized. The filth stays intact; you just hear more of it. Six bonus tracks sweeten the deal, including two previously unreleased cuts: the rehearsal nugget "Melted Corpse" and a rabid Slaughter cover of "Strappado/Incinerator". Add the original artwork reproduction and detailed liner notes and you have a document that belongs next to any serious death metal shelf.
